Ridge tiles cover the meeting point of the roof slopes. Depending on the roof, they may be secured with mortar, a mechanical dry-ridge system or a combination of fixings. The right repair depends on the system already in place and the condition of the tiles and their support.

Cracked or missing mortar is worth investigating, particularly if fragments are appearing below the ridge. It does not automatically mean the whole ridge needs replacing, but a loose tile needs more attention than a cosmetic finish over the surface.

Look only from a safe position at ground level. Do not touch or try to move loose tiles. If you are concerned that something could fall, keep people away from the area beneath it while arranging an assessment.

Repointing or rebedding: what is the difference?

Repairing the joints

Where the tiles and bedding remain sound, repairing deteriorated joints may be considered. The existing condition needs checking first. Adding a thin layer of new mortar over a loose or failing base is unlikely to address the cause.

Addressing loose bedding or tiles

If the underlying bedding has failed, a more substantial repair may be needed, such as lifting and rebedding affected tiles with appropriate fixing arrangements. Broken tiles and surrounding roof details also need consideration. Any recommendation should be based on the roof as it is, rather than a standard repair assumed from a photo.
